What is 7 + 4 ?

Why Teams Do This Sprint

Security and CVE patching

Older Mirth versions don't get security patches. CVEs in the underlying Java and Mirth stack accumulate; running unpatched in production is a HIPAA risk.

FHIR R4 maturity

FHIR R4 support improved substantially across NextGen Connect releases. If you're still on Mirth 3.x, you're missing meaningful FHIR functionality.

Performance improvements

JVM and Mirth core have meaningful throughput and memory improvements in newer versions. Real production teams see 20–40% throughput gains after upgrade.

Vendor support

If you have a NextGen Connect support contract, vendor support drops for older versions. Stay current to keep that lifeline.

Operational features

Newer versions have better admin tooling — improved channel statistics, audit log queries, plugin compatibility — that older versions lack.

What We Deliver

Concrete deliverables. Code in your Git repo at the end.

Pre-upgrade audit: current version, channel inventory, plugin inventory, JVM tuning
Test environment cloned from production with current data
NextGen Connect installed alongside (parallel) the current Mirth
Channel-by-channel export from old version, import to new version
Deprecated transformer function audit and replacement
Database schema migration with rollback plan
Regression test suite run against full channel inventory
Plugin compatibility verification (or replacement)
Zero-downtime cutover plan with traffic-shift batches
Rollback runbook (live during cutover window)
Post-upgrade validation report + signed handover

Common Problems We Fix

If any of these match your situation, the sprint resolves them.

!

Channel export from old version fails to import in new version

Root cause: Channel-export format changes between major versions. Solution: use intermediate format conversion or rebuild channel definitions in the new version using the export as reference.

!

Deprecated transformer functions cause runtime errors

Root cause: Functions removed across major versions (e.g. specific HL7 helper APIs). Solution: pre-upgrade audit identifies all calls; we replace with current equivalents.

!

Plugin doesn't load in new version

Root cause: Plugin built against an older Mirth API. Solution: check vendor for updated plugin or rebuild against current API; in some cases the plugin functionality is now native.

!

Database migration fails on large message store

Root cause: Schema change requires column additions on a multi-million-row table. Solution: pre-stage migration with a backup and run during the maintenance window with proper indexing.

FAQ

NextGen Connect Upgrade — FAQ

How old is “legacy Mirth”?
Mirth Connect 3.x went end-of-life around 2018. 4.0 launched 2019. NextGen Connect (the rebrand) is the current line, with releases through 2024–2025. If you're on 3.x, upgrading is overdue. If you're on 4.0–4.4, you're behind but the upgrade path is straightforward. If you're on a recent NextGen Connect release, you may not need a full upgrade sprint — just incremental version bumps inside Silver managed support.
Can we do this without downtime?
Yes — the standard approach runs the new version in parallel with the current production environment, then shifts traffic in batches per channel during a chosen maintenance window. True zero-downtime is possible for most channel types; some (like channels with stateful queues) may need a brief drain window.
What if a transformer doesn't behave the same in the new version?
We catch this in regression testing. Before cutover, the test suite runs every channel's representative messages through both versions and compares outputs. Discrepancies are flagged and fixed in the sprint. The handover criteria include zero unexpected diffs in the regression suite.
Do we need new licenses?
Mirth Connect / NextGen Connect open-source edition is free; commercial NextGen Connect support contracts are sold by the vendor. Most teams don't need a commercial license — open-source plus our managed support covers all production use cases.
